The Best of 2017
I meant to do this post at the end of 2017, but here is it, already January 2nd, 2018. I’ll stick with my excuses of holiday traveling (back to Fargo where it was a high of -7 on the day I flew back to Oregon), having a cold, dealing with car issues, and general laziness which included a lot of laying on the couch with my dog and watching Netflix.
But here we are in a New Year and before I can really dig into the goals for this year, I wanted to take one last look on last year. Overall, 2017 was an incredible year for me, and I’m hoping I can carry over the things I learned into 2018 to make it even better. It was a year of adventures, a lot of visitors to use my guest room in my house, and a chance to garden in my own backyard for the very first time. Here’s the “Best of” list:
Best Adventure: Hands down, the North Cascades in Washington State was the most amazing place I camped, hiked and climbed in 2017. The climbing and hiking pushed me mentally and physically but the views…oh the mountain peaks were everywhere. The sunrise was spectacular and even included a mountain goat. I really hope to go back.
Best New Food I Tried: The BBQ shrimp at Zydeco Kitchen and Cocktails in Bend, Oregon. I eat a mostly vegetarian diet in my everyday life, but when I travel, I do have a weakness for seafood. My mom and I went to this restaurant specifically to try this dish, and it did not disappoint.
Best New Addition to the World: My best friend and travel partner since college, Nicole, gave birth to her first daughter, Autumn Marie, at the end of September. I haven’t met her yet, but I’m excited for future adventures with this new little human.
Best New Opportunity: In July, I was chosen as a 2017-2018 Hike Like A Woman ambassador. This has been, already, one of the most supportive and fun communities of women I’ve ever been a part of. And I haven’t even met any of the woman in person yet! It has empowered me to write more, share more, start a local hiking group (still growing…) and learn more about blogging and hiking.
Best New Hobby: Backpacking. I backpacked once in college like 20 years ago and didn’t do it since until this summer. I went on a 2 night trip to the Alpine Lakes Wilderness (amazing!), a one night trip in the North Cascades, and a 4 night backpacking trip to the Wallowas. I loved it and can’t wait to do more.
Best New Piece of Gear: I bought a Patagonia Nano Air Hoody jacket and I absolutely love it. I didn’t need a new jacket, but it’s really lightweight but warm. The fabric is so soft and I loved it the second I put it on.
Favorite Short Hike: Drift Creek Falls, Oregon has such a cool suspension bridge with a beautiful waterfall.
Best Book I Read: Lily and the Octopus by Steven Rowley. Be warned, if you love dogs, you WILL cry. A lot.
Best climb: Joshua Tree National Park was a place like no other. The desert is a magical place and I loved exploring the park. The Eye was a really easy climb but it was so much fun and it felt like climbing on another planet.
Favorite Multi-Pitch Climb: North Ingalls’ Peak in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness was 3 pitches of easy fun climbing with amazing mountain views and an alpine lake below.
O.k, that’s enough about last year, let’s get ready for some fun in 2018!!
